As you read Amber's story, think about the life stories that will be written at children's camps this summer.
Amber's Story
It has been nearly 24 years, but I still have fond memories of the missionary couple from Portugal that I met during GA camp the summer after 6th grade. I cannot remember their names after all these years, but I remember being fascinated by their story. I had been in GAs for years at that point, but for some reason, that summer was the first time that it really struck me just how amazing of a life it must be to give up everything you know and move to a foreign country to share the Word of God.
For as long as I can remember, I always planned on being a teacher and I pursued that career whole heartedly. The summer after my first-year teaching, I had an opportunity to take a trip to Nigeria that changed my life forever. After ten years in the classroom, I have finally stepped away from teaching and committed to full-time missions in the village of Opi-Nsukka, Nigeria where I will be running a school and assisting with an orphanage.
Over the past year, I have thought about that summer at GA camp often. I can’t help but look back and be amazed at how early in life God starts planting seeds for our future! He truly sees where we are headed before we ever realize that we are searching. 24 years later and the Portuguese lyrics to ‘God Is So Good’ that I learned from those missionaries still play in my head any time I hear the song… “Deus é tão bom. Deus é tão bom. Deus é tão bom. É tão bom para mim.” God truly is SO good to me and I am so grateful for my years in GAs that introduced me to the life I never knew was in my future!
